An online course is only worth your time and money if the person teaching it actually knows the subject. Here’s how I judge the courses below, having spent years on the other side of them.
I spent years in formal study, field research and lab work to become a plant biologist and environmental scientist. That path isn’t open or appealing to everyone, and it doesn’t need to be. But it did teach me what solid teaching looks like, and what to look for in a course: correct science, a teacher who really knows the field, and material explained clearly enough to actually learn from.
So I’ve picked the courses I believe teach the subject properly, not just the ones with the biggest names or the best sales pages. Each one is here because I think you’d come away having genuinely learned something, and I tell you who it suits best before you sign up.
Here’s where I would start.

1. HomeGrown Herbalist School of Botanical Medicine
I’m selective about the herbal education I put my name next to, so I went through the content, the teaching approach and the depth before featuring this one. The HomeGrown Herbalist School stood out. It’s practical and built on real hands-on experience rather than theory, which is exactly what I look for in a course.
It’s taught by Dr. Patrick Jones, a veterinarian and clinical herbalist with decades of practice, and the lessons come from real cases rather than a textbook. The curriculum is broad, covering anatomy and physiology, plant identification, medicine-making, and how the body works, so students get the science alongside the practical skills. It’s self-paced with quizzes, videos, optional workshops and plant walks, and you keep lifetime access to the material.
I chose it because it gives a genuine, practical foundation for understanding and working with medicinal plants, taught by someone who clearly knows the subject. As always, herbal study is not the same as medical training, so treat what you learn as knowledge to build on, not a replacement for professional care.

2. UK-Accredited Online Herbalism & Holistic Health Diplomas
Where the school above goes deep on one path, this one goes broad. It’s a catalogue of accredited online courses in herbalism, nutrition and holistic health, from a Master Herbalist Diploma down to shorter, focused topics. I include it because the range means most people can find a level that fits, whether you want a full diploma or just a single subject to start with, all studied from home at your own pace.
A couple of honest points. “Accredited” and “diploma” carry weight for personal learning, but check what a given certificate actually qualifies you to do before you count on it professionally, since that varies by course and country. And as with all herbal study, this is education about plants and wellness, not medical training, so treat it that way.

3. Online Courses Australia / Horticulture
The two courses above are about herbs. This one is for the gardener who wants to go broader, into horticulture and garden design as a proper skill set. Online Courses Australia runs self-paced horticulture bundles that cover the practical foundations of growing and caring for plants, along with separate landscape and garden design tracks for people who want to shape whole outdoor spaces rather than tend a few beds.
What makes this worth a look is the scope. Their Horticulture Essentials bundle suits someone building real, structured knowledge for their own garden or a future career, and the Landscape and Garden Design bundles go further into planning and creating outdoor spaces. This is training for the how-to and the craft of growing, so treat it as the practical counterpart to the plant-science side I write about, not a replacement for it. If you want structured, career-minded gardening skills rather than herbal study, start here.
