Starting a vegetable garden is where most people either thrive or give up, and the difference is a few early decisions.

In this guide I skip the theory and tell you exactly what to do: the easiest crops to begin with, the four things that decide whether a garden works, a bed layout you can copy, a spacing and sowing chart to print, a week-by-week first month, and a fix-it section for when something goes wrong.

Written by a plant biologist, in plain language, for a first-timer who wants results, not a lecture.

Plant Biologist & Environmental Scientist

Hi,

I'm Serge, a plant biologist and environmental scientist. I hold a BSc in Plant Biology and an MSc in Environmental Biology and Biogeochemistry. My research has focused on how climate warming and ozone stress affect silver birch growth and soil carbon cycling under open-field conditions.

I've worked with gas analyzers, soil respiration chambers, and open-air exposure systems measuring real ecosystem processes. I've completed specialized postgraduate training in ecotoxicology, air pollution and environmental exposure, indoor microbiology, and atmosphere-biosphere gas exchange. My training also covers plant biochemistry, botany, and the compounds plants produce, which is the understanding I bring to herbs and how they are used.

At GreenBioLife, I apply that scientific foundation to explain how plants, herbs, and ecosystems really work. No hype, no vague generalizations. Just analysis grounded in real biology and chemistry.
